CHAPTER NINETEEN

A cry of laughter flew up from the crowd, and Marianne couldn’t think straight. All the women working there yelled out, “What’s a fancy lady doing in here? Takin’ our jobs, is she?

Men began to leer in her direction, their eyes roving over her pink cheeks and tight breeches, seeing her as she really was. One man on the other side of the room licked his lips. Lucy, with a shocked face, left to stand by the bar with the other women.

William, angry at himself for allowing these bastards to join them, moved his hand to his small blade. He always brought it with him when he rode in the dark to the brothel. Some of the men got rowdy at times and angry if they lost bets. He walked quickly towards Marianne to grab her by the wrist and get her out of there as soon as possible. She looked to be on the verge of tears and was white with terror.

But Colin stopped him. William could see he was drunk beyond reason and felt a twinge of anger at what might be going through Colin’s mind.

“Let her stay, lad. Perhaps, she can show us a few things. She’s heaps prettier than the dirty lot we get served in here. He moved to touch a finger to Marianne’s cheek. “And, she appears tae be...untouched.”

Before Colin’s dirty finger could make it to Marianne’s soft cheek, William’s strong hand grasped onto his wrist. “Ye may not want tae be doin’ that, lad. She is not for ye tae touch.”

Colin laughed at the serious expression in William’s eyes. “Och, lad, what has gotten intae ye? Do ye want her for yerself, is that it? Well, ye can have it, right after we’re done with her.”

Roy moved from behind Marianne to grab her. She felt her body tense as his arms came around her, and a cold blade pressed against her throat. She tried to scream, but the sound did not come. Her body wouldn’t listen! Scream, Marianne, fight back, do something!

William was quick as a flash. With an elbow, he hit Colin in the face to the side, and the man went down in a heap. He drew his blade slowly and pointed it at Roy.

“As I said, lad, ye dinnae want tae be doing that.” William was taller and bigger built than the two of them, but the men were drunk and feeling confident.

“Ye will have tae fight me for her.” He released Marianne to William’s relief, and Marianne rushed to the other side of the table, looking nervously about her like a cat trapped among ravenous dogs. Those in the room cleared a way so that the two men could have room to fight.

Roy held up a shaking blade toward William, but he couldn’t seem to decide which William to look at. He began to swipe it back and forth crazily. William ducked and dodged as Marianne looked on with amazement. Finally, William bent low and grabbed Roy’s legs to tackle him to the ground.
